The retreat

Morocco does not need
a filter.

The medina of Marrakech, the kasbahs of the Atlas foothills, the face of a nomad in the Sahara light - these are not subjects that need enhancement. They need patience, the right angle, and a guide who knows when the light changes. This retreat takes photographers from the souks of Marrakech through Atlas mountain villages to the dunes of Erg Chigaga, with a daily workshop component in every location.

Three nights in Marrakech, two nights in the Atlas, three nights in the Sahara. All levels welcome: smartphone photographers, film enthusiasts, and digital SLR users. Morning yoga and an evening hammam give the body time to process what the eyes have taken in. Pottery and a cooking class provide a different kind of creative engagement.

The experience

What awaits you

Photography workshop

Daily guided workshop in each location: Marrakech medina composition, Atlas landscape technique, Sahara golden hour and portrait sessions. All levels and all formats.

Landscape shooting

Sunrise and sunset shooting sessions in the Atlas and Sahara. The golden hour light of Erg Chigaga is available nowhere else in North Africa.

Medina portrait sessions

Guided portrait sessions in Marrakech's souks with community consent. The faces, hands and textiles of the medina artisans.

Morning yoga

Daily sunrise yoga to open the eyes and the body before the day's shooting begins. Stillness before motion.

Pottery workshop

Half a day with a Marrakech master potter. The texture and colour of Moroccan clay as a photographic subject - and as a creative practice in itself.

Moroccan cooking class and hammam

A private cooking class with a local chef and an evening hammam. Two traditions that engage the senses photography cannot reach.

After dark

The darkest sky in Africa.

Erg Chigaga has zero light pollution for a thousand kilometres. Every departure of this retreat includes the night module: telescopes, Milky Way composition, and the long exposures that only this sky allows.

Telescope workshop

Guided telescope sessions in Marrakech, the Atlas and the Sahara. Setup, alignment and long-exposure technique with an astronomy guide.

Milky Way composition

Star trails, light painting and deep-sky framing under expert instruction. The core skills of night photography, taught on the dunes.

Bivouac under the stars

One night in the open at Erg Chigaga, 60 km from the last road. The camera runs while you lie back and watch the same sky it is recording.

Ice bath and breathwork

Cold immersion and breathwork before the night sessions. Recovery that sharpens perception, which is the whole point when you shoot after midnight.

These weeks run with a partner

This retreat is not on open sale. We build it with a studio, a club or a clinic that brings its own group, and we open a date around their season rather than ours. Tell us who you would bring and when, and we will come back with a week.

Where you stay

Superior accommodation, chosen on the ground by our own experts.

Nothing on this site was booked from a catalogue. Every riad, camp, kasbah and guesthouse was found, visited and slept in by one of our experts before it was ever offered to a guest. The standard is superior throughout, and the reason is practical: after a day of walking, surfing or altitude, comfort is not a luxury, it is what makes the next day possible.

Visited before it is offered

Our team travels the country year-round. If one of us has not slept there, it does not go into a programme.

Original, never generic

Private riads, our own exclusive-use camp in the dunes, restored family kasbahs, guesthouses in Berber villages. Places you cannot book from a screen.

Comfort as a working tool

Real beds, hot water, quiet rooms, proper food. Recovery is part of the programme, not an afterthought.
