The Women's Retreat Morocco Guide: Formats, Safety, and Where to Go
Morocco has quietly become one of the most rewarding places on earth for a women's retreat. Here is how to choose your format, your season, and your landscape.
Ask a group of well-travelled women where they felt most cared for on a retreat, and Morocco comes up more often than the brochures would suggest. Not because it is fashionable, although it is, but because the country solves a problem that female group travel keeps running into: how to feel genuinely far away without giving up on comfort, safety, or substance. Three hours from most European capitals and seven from New York, Morocco offers the Sahara, the High Atlas, two coastlines, and a hammam culture that has been run by and for women for centuries.
The range matters more than it first appears. A women's retreat in Morocco can be a silent trek through Berber villages, a surf week on the Atlantic, a riad in Marrakech organised around hammam and food, or a private camp in the dunes with a ceremony under the stars. Few destinations let a group choose its landscape this precisely, and fewer still let it change landscape mid-week without losing a day in transit.
This guide is written for the groups we host most: friends marking a decade or a decision, professional women who want depth without performance, clubs and alumni circles travelling together, and women joining alone who want a group worth joining. It covers the honest safety picture, the formats that exist, and the destinations female groups book most.
Why Morocco Works for Women's Groups
Distances are short and contrasts are enormous. From Marrakech you can reach the Atlas in ninety minutes, the coast in three hours, and the edge of the Sahara in a day. That geography lets a seven-night retreat feel like three journeys. Add a culture of hospitality where the guest is a responsibility rather than a transaction, women-run cooperatives in the rose valley and the argan groves, and rituals such as the hammam that were designed as women's spaces long before wellness had a market, and the fit becomes obvious.
Safety, Answered Honestly
It is the first question in almost every enquiry, so it deserves a direct answer. Morocco is a safe destination for women's groups when the operation is private and the local team is known. Our retreats run on properties we control entirely: private riads, lodges, and a desert camp that hosts one group at a time. The team has been vetted over years, women practitioners and hosts are present throughout, and support is on call around the clock. Airport pickup is included for every guest, including those landing alone at night.
In public spaces, the experience is the same as in any busy Mediterranean city: the medina is loud, commerce is theatrical, and attention exists. With a guide who knows every alley and shopkeeper by name, it becomes a pleasure rather than a negotiation. Guests who have travelled with us describe feeling more looked after in Morocco than in most European capitals, which is exactly the standard we hold ourselves to.
Choose Your Format
Women only, fully private
Our Pour Elles programme creates private retreats for groups of eight to fourteen women. You bring the group and the occasion; we co-create the week: walking circuits with Berber women guides, the ahouach ceremony under the stars, the rose ritual of the Dades valley, movement and breathwork led by women practitioners. Nothing is shared with strangers, and nothing is off the shelf.
Women led, open enrolment
Joining alone is not a compromise. Several editions across our calendar are led by women practitioners and draw predominantly female groups: silent treks, yoga and pilates weeks, and the walking circuits. Groups stay small, eight to fourteen, and are composed with care.
Mixed small groups
Some of the best weeks we host are mixed: couples, friends, colleagues. If your group is not women only but the intent is the same, every edition on the calendar is open to you, and the standard of care is identical.
Three Destinations Women's Groups Book Most
The Sahara
A private camp at Erg Chigaga, sixty kilometres from the last paved road. Dawn movement on the dunes, silence that does real work, and a night sky that reorganises perspective. For groups marking something, an anniversary, a recovery, a threshold, the desert remains unmatched.
Marrakech
A private riad in the medina, days built around hammam, food, movement, and the souk taken as a sensory practice rather than a shopping errand. The gentlest introduction to Morocco, and the easiest logistics for a first group trip.
Essaouira and the Atlantic coast
Wind, ramparts, sardines grilled at the port, and some of the most consistent surf in Africa. For groups who want a women's surf retreat, morning sessions at Essaouira or further south at Taghazout can be arranged with female coaches, followed by afternoons of yoga and recovery. The ocean does for some groups what the desert does for others.
When to Go
October to April is the prime window: warm days, cool nights, clear skies. November is the connoisseur's month in the desert, with the year's best stargazing. Spring brings the rose harvest to the Dades valley and green light to the Atlas. Summer belongs to the coast, where the Atlantic keeps afternoons at a civilised temperature.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Morocco safe for a women-only retreat?
Yes, with a private operation and a known local team. Our properties host one group at a time, women hosts and practitioners are present throughout, and support is available day and night. Thousands of women travel with us and with operators like us every year without incident.
What should we wear?
On our properties, whatever you like: they are entirely private. In the medina and villages, most guests are comfortable in loose layers that cover shoulders and knees, the same pragmatic wardrobe you would pack for a summer city in southern Europe.
Can we privatise a full week for our group?
Yes. From eight women, any destination on our calendar can be booked as a fully private edition on your dates, or co-created from scratch through Pour Elles.
The simplest way to begin is to see everything in one place. Browse the full retreat calendar, note the dates and landscapes that fit your group, and write to us. The right week tends to identify itself quickly.
