How a surf week is built

The tide sets the timetable, and everything else is arranged around it.

01

The surf window, not the clock

Sessions move with the tide and the swell, which means a six o'clock start some days and a ten o'clock one on others. The schedule is published the evening before, every evening.

02

Two hours in the water, properly coached

Small groups by level with a local coach per group, video review when it helps. Beach breaks for people learning, point breaks for people who can already paddle into them.

03

Afternoon on land

Mobility for shoulders and hips, breath work for hold-downs, and a long lunch. Surfing twice a day for a week is how people go home with an injury.

04

Sunset on the roof

Slow yoga as the wind drops, then dinner. The point is not the photograph; it is the thoracic spine after six days of paddling.

Where to surf, and when

Morocco's Atlantic runs for two and a half thousand kilometres. These three sections cover most of what a group needs.

Taghazout and Tamraght

Right-hand points, from Anchor Point down to the beginner beaches twenty minutes away. The season runs September to April, when the north-west swell arrives and the water sits around eighteen degrees.

Essaouira

Wind city, which makes it the kitesurf and windsurf answer rather than the longboard one. Reliable from March to June and again in September and October, with a UNESCO medina to walk when the sea is unworkable.

Dakhla

A flat-water lagoon on one side and open ocean on the other, wind almost every day, and enough space that a group never shares a launch. It is the far south: four hours' flying from Casablanca, and worth it for kitesurf weeks.

Surfing in Morocco, answered

Can a complete beginner come?
Yes. Groups split by level and beginners surf the sand-bottom beaches, not the points. Boards and wetsuits are provided; you bring a swimsuit and a willingness to be bad at something for three days.
When is the swell best?
September to April for Taghazout and the points around it. March to June and September to November for the wind on the Essaouira and Dakhla side. Summer is small and warm, which suits beginners and nobody else.
Is the water cold?
Between seventeen and twenty degrees most of the year. A 3/2 wetsuit covers it, and we provide them. The air in winter mornings is colder than the sea, which surprises people.
Can a surf school bring its own group?
Yes, and it is the format the coastal weeks were built for. The school keeps the coaching and the client relationship; Umnya carries accommodation, transfers, food, the recovery programme and the ground operation.

Before the dates exist

Tell us when. We will tell you where.

We open a small number of weeks each season. Choose the window you have in mind and what you come for, and you will hear about those dates before they are published.
