Photography Retreat

Your phone goes in a lockbox. Your camera stays with you. Chefchaouen's blue alleyways, Essaouira's Atlantic ramparts, the Saharan dunes at golden hour. Eight days of intentional looking.

The experience

Photography Retreat

The paradox of smartphone photography is this: the device that enables effortless image-making is the same device that destroys the attentional state required to see photographically. Every photographer describes the same shift when they put down their phone and pick up a dedicated camera: the relationship with time changes. A phone photograph is a reflex. A camera photograph is a decision, composition, exposure, moment. At Umnya, photography retreats run on a phone-free protocol: all smartphones are locked away on arrival. Participants shoot with their own DSLR, mirrorless, or film cameras, or borrow from the kit provided. The programme crosses Morocco's most visually distinctive destinations: Chefchaouen, where Ottoman-era Andalusian architecture meets blue-washed Moroccan vernacular in a light that painters and photographers have documented since Delacroix's 1832 journey; Essaouira, whose white ramparts, blue fishing boats, and Atlantic light have a particular quality of diffusion that is unlike any other coastal town on the continent; the Sahara, where the relationship between light and landform reaches its maximum legibility at the hours immediately before and after sunset. Workshop format: one guided photographic walk each morning, review and discussion each evening. No social media uploads during the retreat, images are processed and shared on the final day.
